This is another book that was on my large ‘to-be-read’ pilefrom June 2015! So many books, so little time. I finished this in one sitting, which ended at 4 AM.
Yes, it was that good.
I enjoyed Kevin Kwan’s debut novel, Crazy Rich Asians, and I was happy that this one was even better.
China Rich Girlfriend is told through multiple viewpoints and other storytelling tools that represent the times: emails, texts, and gossip columns (ha). This book flows together seamlesslyKwan is a masterful storyteller who draws you into this world. He’s so good, I want to live in this book. Right this very second.
In this sequel, Eleanor Young, Rachel Chu, Nick Young, and ASTRID (!!!) all return, and they are better than ever. Eleanor is still meddling, Rachel and Nick get married (and meet their expanding family), and Astrid is still the queen, in my opinion.
There are a few new players, who are all hysterical, fully formed, and entertaining. I love the addition of Carlton Bao and Colette Bing. I always say, if I hear the term “fashion blogger” one more time, I’m going to lose it. But if you’re going to write a fashion blogger, she has to be OVER-THE-TOP-MENTAL in every way. Bravo Kevin Kwan for dreaming up Colette!
“I don’t understand. How can a credit card ever be rejected? It’s not like it’s a kidney!”
― Kevin Kwan,
Paris shopping to die for (well, fashion porn in general), Colette’s house, and a hilarious John Legend cameo are just a few more things to love.
Honestly, this book is what soap opera dreams are made of!
Kwan brings realistic levity when contrasting American humility versus Asian materialism. All of it is so true! (disclosure: I’m Filipino, not Chinese. Even still, facets of this novel felt…familiar. Eleanor Young has a lot in common with many of my Auntie’s, sadly.) The bulk of these characters are RIDICULOUS but as a reader, I love them.
“This little girl needs to be raised properly-by a team of sensible Cantonese nannies, not interfering parents!”
― Kevin Kwan,
As for that last face off between Rachel and Colette…..well now….what a wild ride.
Please tell me there will be a third book with some of these characters? Colette’s lunacy needs a novella at the very least!
This is a page-turning, funny, and realistic story that pokes fun, while shedding light at what it really means to be “China Rich.”
